Scott Thoma, Out of the Blue

Two Minnesota authors will be here at the library soon. Scott Thoma will be here on March 21 at 1:00 p.m. He will talk about his book Out of the Blue. It is a non-fiction book about the F5 tornado that touched down in Tracy, MN on June 13, 1968. This is the first recorded F5 tornado in Minnesota history. Nine people were killed and 125 injured that day. Approximately one fourth of the town’s homes were destroyed . Scott lived in Tracy at the time.

Out of the Blue tells the story of two sisters who lived through the tornado. Linda (Haugen) Vaske and Pam Haugen were 20 and 8 at the time. Linda and her husband Clifford were recently married. Clifford had been drafted for the war in Vietnam and was in training in the state of Washington at the time of the tornado. Linda and Clifford had been finalizing adoption papers for 2 year old Nancy Vlahos. Although the town had blown the emergency siren, Linda, Pam, and Nancy were sucked out of the house by a 300 mile-per-hour wind.

Scott is currently a resident of Willmar, MN. He has been a sports writer and a sports editor for a Minnesota newspaper for nearly 30 years.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Morris Public Library. The Morris Seniors Group will serve refreshments.

Frederick Blanch, Last Words: Frederick’s Bionary

Roseville, MN resident Frederick Blanch, has written a book he likes to call a dictionary and a biography all in one. This book published by North Star Press in September of 2011, follows a dictionary format where the words are in bold letters and the description follows. These descriptions range from a few words to several pages. Last Words has won a 2011 Minnesota Book Award. The humor in his book is reminiscent of Mark Twain and Will Rogers. Frederick will be here at the library on Thursday, April at 2:00 p.m.

Other notes of interest: The MAHS Computer Students have written sequels to several childrens books. These books are now on display at the library. The class will be putting on Story Hour next week on Thursday, March 21 at 10:30 a.m. One of the books will be read at that time.

Hothead by Cal Ripken, Jr. Connor Sullivan is the best player on his Babe Ruth Team. He is an all-star shortstop, a great cleanup hitter, and all around good guy that everyone likes. Lately though, things are bothering him and he can’t keep his anger under control. His best friend starts to avoid him and the coach wants to bench him. Will Connor be able to straighten out his life in time to win the championship?

Peter and the Star Catchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. In this fast paced prequel to J. M.
Splendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz. Gsrpare Grinsini, expert puppeteer, is invited to entertain at the home of Clara Wintermute, who is spellbound by Gaspare’s act. Gaspare accepts the invitation and brings along his two assistants, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall. That night Clara disappears and Gaspare is suspected of the crime. Together Lizzie Rose and Parsefall seek to find out what has happened to Clara.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman. In the kingdom of Geredd, dragons disguise themselves as humans. They endear themselves to the kingdom by sharing their mathematical knowledge with universities as teachers. Seraphina, a gifted musician, joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered. As Seraphina investigates the murder, she works with the captain of the Queen’s guard, Prince Lucian Kiggs. She also tries to protect her own terrible secret from being known.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Ivan lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. He has grown accustomed to humans and watches them through the glass walls. He rarely misses life in the jungle anymore. Ivan spends his days thinking about TV and his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant. Ruby helps Ivan see their home and his art in a new way.

VLS Press Release:

Viking Library System card holders now have access to over 100 popular magazine titles in digital format. Residents of the six-county region can sign up online with a Viking Library System library card to obtain an account and then immediately begin to download their favorite magazines. All magazines are in full color with all stories, pictures, charts, and advertising included. Some of the titles including National Geographic are interactive and include videos and activities.

Digital magazines can be read on any computer, tablet, or smart phone including Kindles and all Apple products. Account set-up requires Internet access, but downloaded magazines can be read offline at any time. Digital magazines provide easy portable access to many titles, and sometimes the only access to titles which no longer provide print editions.
The service includes simultaneous use, allowing an unlimited number of users to view the magazine at the same time. Every title can be kept as long as the user chooses; there are no due dates and no fines. The magazines can simply be deleted when no longer needed.

“Digital magazines offered without charge through public libraries are a very new service,” according to VLS Director, Peg Werner. “We are pleased that our member libraries will have this service available to their customers.”
Residents of Viking Library System, which includes the counties of Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, and Traverse, can get a library card in any of the VLS member libraries located in Browns Valley, Alexandria (Douglas County), Elbow Lake, Fergus Falls, Glenwood, Hancock, Morris, New York Mills, Pelican Rapids, Perham, and Wheaton or at any bookmobile stop.
Online sign-up for digital magazine access is available with a library card at www.viking.lib.mn.us/digitallibrary.html or by visiting your local library’s website.
